Bomb Rush Cyberfunk

2023, Team Reptile

"Graffiti would be hella
boring if it was legal!"

There is exactly one and only one thing I am greatful to twitter for: bringing BRC to my attention.

The 2021 trailer appeared on my feed one day and I was immediately enraptured by it's aesthetics and attitude. It's crazy to say but, in that moment I knew I was going to love this game.

Although I eagerly awaited BRC's release, because it didn't have a hard date (and would later be pushed back from 2022 to 2023) it did fall off my radar for a bit.

I got preoccupied with other games, namely Hi-Fi Rush in July-early August of 2023. And after finishing the aforementioned game I thought to myself "huh...this game kinda reminds me of that Bomb Rush game I was looking forward to...I wonder what the progress on that is". So I mosey my way over the Team Reptile twitter and BAM! low and behold, it's Out.

Every other game, no, every other thing was immediately put on the backburner the moment I rushed to the steam store to buy it. Luckily, I had already beaten Hi-Fi Rush because my fate was sealed as soon as the install finished.

This for sure won't come as a surprise but...yeah, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is easily in my top 5 favorite video games.

Characters played most often: Bel, Mesh, Red, Rietveld

Favorite songs: Big City Life, Funk Express, JACK DA FUNK, GET ENUF, DA PEOPLE, Scraped on the way out, Condensed Milk

Favorite Map:Brink Terminal (I based the color palette of this page off of it!)

So what even is this game?

BRC is an action-adventure platformer with an emphasis on combos and scores using your choice of movestyle: skateboard, BMX or inline skates. The other main mechanic is graffiti. There are certain spots you can throw up your graffiti and gain REP for your crew, which is necessary for story progression.

There are a ton of collectables like more graffiti tags, music, recolors for characters and movestyles, and more. Between finding the collectables and figuring out how to get to them, it's a pretty fun game to try to 100%!

Speedruns are pretty fun to watch too!

And there's a modding scene! **Some spoilers ahead** **Make sure you have all mod requirements, I am not responsible for any game-breaking issues**

Slopcrew

Multiplayer mod! You'll see other players on your map (even during story mode cutscenes) You can participate in score battles, combo battles and races and form crews via the slopnet website. There's a dedicated discord where they sometimes host big in-game events and contests.

Custom characters and reskins

postgame characters
Beat and Gum
Escher (this one hasn't been updated for awhile. It still works for me but be careful!)

Custom Maps

Noteably a lot of JSR/JSRF ones! I personally haven't tried them yet.

Quality of Life

BombRushRadio: Add custom music
BetterToilet: Keep toilets open when used without a heat level.
Shuffleify: Shuffle and repeat songs. Supports BombRushRadio.
Fast Travel: Adds a phone app for the Taxi.

Merch + My Collection

Physical Switch copy with sleeve art
I already own it on PC and admittely, it doesn't run great on Switch (ugh...that frame rate) but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to grab a physical copy.

Graffiti Booklet
Came with the physical switch preorder. Features all the graffiti in the game and all the artists who designed them. The graffiti featured on the right includes all the playable character throwies designed by Dion Koster, director of the game.
There's an unused Faux throwie, which is interesting! I wonder if, at one point, he was going to be a playable character post-game?
Here's a handy list of all the graffiti, by the way!

Graffiti Stickers
Also came with the Switch preorder. These are safely in my sticker book. I almost put them on my switch dock, but I don't want to risk damaging or wearing them out ^_^;;;

Finger Boards
I don't own any of these but!! They're so cool! They're based after three in-game alt colors of the skateboard.
